Do Not Trust This Company; They Raise Rates After Sign-Up

These guys have a broken website and app that cause a lot of headaches. They have major penalties for any sort of odd infraction. It doesn't matter if you are right or wrong; the penalties will never be refunded. This company routinely raises rents by 25% or more within 90 days of signing up with them. This partially pays for discounts they issue to new suckers whom they vacuum up and suck dry. You cannot rely on their pricing, since it changes after you sign up.

Reporting mold, mildew, rats, rat nests & *** in units.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Rising rates forced move from two climate-controlled units.
  • - Heat and moisture damaged items; mold and rats; insurance does not cover these.

Continuously increasing rates made me move out of the two climate-controlled units I had rented since early 2023. Professional movers arrived to remove the contents. Upon opening the 10x20 unit, the odor was pungent, and the movers brought to my attention the rats' nests and *** I immediately notified Lisa, the CubeSmart manager whose face remained expressionless as she replied, 'That's not our fault. Some people leave food in their units, and that attracts rats. I put pellets out.' This let me know that she was fully aware of the rat problem. She said there was a policy that food was not allowed in the units but could not tell me how that policy was enforced. When I asked why customers with units in the vicinity of rats or suspected rats were not notified, she allowed as how that was not CubeSmart's problem. I must disagree.

Despite their claims and the extra cost for me for climate control, furniture was cracked and damaged due to high heat for extended periods of time. No climate control here. Other items were ruined due to moisture (aka water). Having CubeSmart insurance was a huge joke—on me—as they do not cover 'mold, mildew, or rodents.' They wouldn't have those issues—mold and mildew for sure—if they really did have climate control.

A totally disgusting situation resulting in damaged and irreparable property. CubeSmart takes your money, raises the rent, offers no assistance or notification that they know rats are living in the facility, and then CubeSmart denies any culpability or responsibility.

Do not use CubeSmart. Check other reviews. Lots of mold, mildew, rats, and high prices.

See photo evidence below—

—rats' nest remnants, *** mattress eaten through.

—Mold on wood headboard

—Mold on the wall/floor of the unit

—Mold on walnut table

—rat poison packet (eaten) other manager told me, 'Rats eat that and die!'—and then where do they go??

—rat poison packet ready for new customers ;-)

—Oriental rug ruined

Overall, a disgusting, nasty ripoff!

User's recommendation: Do not trust Cube Smart. Do not entrust your property to them.

Nightmare Experience - CubeSmart - 215-** **nd Avenue, Bayside, NY 11361

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Bayside CubeSmart faced a move-day disaster.
  • - The doors were locked and the posted hours failed.
  • - I rented a third unit in Flushing and paid extra.

I rented two units at CubeSmart, located at 215-** **nd Avenue, Bayside, NY, a couple of months before my move, trusting that my belongings would be secure and accessible when I needed them. Initially, everything seemed fine; the rental process was straightforward, and the staff appeared helpful.

The day before my move, I stopped by the facility to buy boxes. The same employee who had rented me my unit assured me they would be open on Sunday. I left feeling reassured, only to experience one of the most costly and infuriating moving day disasters you could imagine.

On 4/27/2025, I arrived with a fully loaded 28-foot moving truck. I was met with locked doors, pulled-down gates, and complete silence despite their posted hours stating they would be open until 6 PM. At least five other frustrated customers stood outside, all desperately calling CubeSmart corporate, trying to make sense of the situation. Even their customer service reps were baffled; their system confirmed that the location should have been open.

For over an hour, I was put on hold repeatedly while the corporate rep scrambled to reach the store manager, emergency contacts, and the district manager—none of whom answered. The district manager promised to investigate and call me back, but that call never came.

With the truck full and nowhere to go, CubeSmart's corporate rep was able to find me a unit at the Flushing, NY location, forcing me to rent a third unit I didn't need at my expense. Because of this, I was unable to complete my move that day. I had to take time off work, rent a U-Haul, and finish moving days later, costing me hundreds of dollars and added frustration.

Just when I thought the ordeal was behind me, a few days later during my final trip to complete my move at the Bayside location, the manager shut down elevator access at 7:45 PM despite access hours being clearly posted until 8 PM. I had already been there for over an hour, actively unloading my belongings, with no warning that access would be suddenly cut off.

When I knocked on the office door seeking help, the female employee inside refused to even look at me at first. Then, she coldly said, 'We're closed.' When I pointed out the posted hours stated otherwise, she smirked and dismissed me, refusing to help or give her name. I later found out her name was Isis.

When I persisted in asking for access, her irritation turned into outright hostility; she suddenly threatened me with eviction, sending a wave of stress, anxiety, and fear through me.

Then, in a stunning escalation, she called the police on me. When the officers arrived, I calmly explained the entire ordeal. They agreed I should be allowed elevator access to secure my unit properly before leaving, and she told them she would comply.

However, the moment the officers left, she reneged on her promise and began announcing over the loudspeaker that I had to vacate the premises immediately. When I reminded her of her agreement with the police, she refused to open the elevators. Fearing retaliation against my belongings, I called 911 again and requested the officers return.

About 30 minutes later, the police arrived for the second time and again asked her to provide access. By that point, I had reloaded all my items into my rental U-Haul van. I no longer hoped to move anything into storage; I just wanted to confirm that my unit was properly locked and secured. She initially refused but eventually acquiesced, and an officer escorted both of us so I could verify my unit one last time.

Days later, I discovered a paper notice taped to my unit stating that my rental had been terminated, with a deadline of May 5, 2025, to remove my belongings. This sudden and baseless termination was a direct retaliation for the previous threat the manager made when she angrily told me I was evicted simply for questioning the early elevator shutdown.

Still having received no call from the district manager for a follow-up or attempt to resolve the situation, I decided to escalate the matter by sending a formal letter to CubeSmart Corporate, addressed to the Vice President of Operations. A few days later, I finally received a call from the district manager. She informed me that they were willing to offer a partial reimbursement for the inconvenience, but the amount offered was far below the actual costs I incurred.

Worse yet, the offer came with conditions: I would have to vacate both CubeSmart locations (Bayside & Flushing) and sign a release that also contained a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). I told her that I would now be forced to spend even more out-of-pocket money to move my belongings again. She denied my request for full reimbursement. Within a couple of days after that conversation, for fear of retaliation, I hired a moving company to remove all of my belongings from both CubeSmart facilities and transfer them to another storage company. I simply could no longer trust CubeSmart to safeguard my property.

Disheartened, I sent a second letter to the Vice President of Operations, expressing my disappointment with the inadequate offer and the forced relocation. I made it clear that this ordeal had already cost me over $3,500, including moving fees, rental trucks, time off work, and now a full relocation from both CubeSmart facilities. I was still deeply unhappy with how the situation was handled and firmly requested full reimbursement for the financial burden their mismanagement had placed on me, along with a formal apology.

Two weeks have passed, and I have received no call, no email, no written response—just silence.

To this day, I have yet to be given an explanation as to why the facility was randomly closed on my moving day, why their staff acted with such blatant disregard for customer service, or why I was given a termination notice. No apology. No accountability. Just silence.

This experience was beyond frustrating. CubeSmart's failure in communication, blatant disregard for lease terms, and shocking lack of professionalism took what should have been a routine move and turned it into an exhausting, chaotic ordeal that lasted weeks and left me drained and financially burdened.

Above all, it revealed that CubeSmart does not prioritize its customers. Their lack of empathy, refusal to take accountability, and absence of meaningful customer service made a difficult situation into a deeply frustrating and costly ordeal.

I trusted CubeSmart with my belongings. What I got in return was stress, financial loss, and absolute negligence. I strongly advise everyone to reconsider renting at CubeSmart Bayside, NY, or at any other CubeSmart location.

Loss:

Pros:
  • Location is great
Cons:
  • Disregard of lease terms
  • Unreliable
  • Poor customer service

Preferred solution: Full refund

User's recommendation: I strongly advise against renting at CubeSmart Bayside, NY or at any other CubeSmart location.

AI Highlights
  • - Price has doubled in about a year.
  • - Manager was rude during vermin-related unit access.
  • - Seeks policy on access times; notes no restroom or trash.

I have had my unit for approx 1 year, and the price has already gone up 2x. Plus, the manager is on my *** rudely whenever I have gone to access my unit to deal with the vermin problem within the huge unit in an attempt to organize and maybe set vermin traps and to get access to further protect my belongings.

I'm really sick of managers who are power-hungry, and I would really like to know what the actual policy is on the time limit on accessibility of the unit I pay for. It is a large unit, and upon getting the unit, it was filled with my belongings and was placed in the unit by movers. I want to have access to: 1. Deal with the critter problem.

2. To protect my furniture so vermin do not nest in my nice furniture, etc. 3. To consolidate and get rid of trash and stuff not really needing to keep in storage.

In order to save money, since the price is getting a major dent in my wallet. What is the policy on the time limit for access to my unit? Also, it really sucks there isn't any access to a restroom or trash. And I'm sick of being talked down to by management that is on everyone's *** who are accessing their units!

Managers have a storage Nazi mentality. When I go to my unit, it is not to loiter! I need to be able to have time to get in and protect my items from being destroyed by critters! Help!

The manager claimed that I am not welcome to go through my stuff according to the district manager. Then she claimed that if my neighbor with business supplies comes and is unable to get into his unit, 'I won't like it because he is 'NOT NICE.'' As she proceeded to 'wrap it up,' I am not welcomed there! No loitering allowed in the future! What is up with the attitude?

My car was 2 feet over into the neighbor's unit space. If the owner of that unit showed up, all I had to do is back up 2-4 feet for them to have full access. I did not appreciate this witch's tone. She is mental!

So! What are the rules on the time of accessibility of customers' units?

Text 951 641 **** Asap please. Thank you in advance!

User's recommendation: Stay away from using" Cubesmart" location in Hemet CA price inflation is very high and you are not allowed timely access to your Unit without being verbally abused ,Reprimanded and Harrased by both Managers at the same time as they threatened you with how other Unit renters are not nice!! Cube Smart demonstrates practices that could be...

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Cube Smart storage is described as predatory.
  • - Rent rose 74.5% in 16 months.
  • - Promotions may lure, but higher rates follow.
  • - Avoid long-term commitments.

Cube Smart demonstrates practices that could be characterized as predatory, particularly in the context of storage unit rentals. The company appears to capitalize on the scarcity of storage options and the inherent vulnerabilities of its tenants by imposing substantial and often unjustified rent increases over irregular time frames, often provided with minimal notice.

Over a period of 16 months, I have encountered an aggregate rental increase of 74.5% for a single storage unit.

Initially, prospective customers may be attracted by promotional offers, such as a pro-rated rate for the first months rent or a contractual note referencing an alleged discount on the regular monthly rate.

However, following this introductory phase, tenants may find themselves subject to the previously mentioned exploitative practices.

It is advisable for potential customers to consider alternative storage facilities that offer greater transparency and fairness in their pricing structures. Additionally, individuals should be cautious of long-term commitments; depending on ones financial circumstances, the risk of becoming unable to meet rental obligations could lead to restricted access to personal belongings.

User's recommendation: Consider alternative storage facilities that offer greater transparency and fairness in their pricing structures.

However, a review of other posts within this forum of a similar nature would not yield any surprises concerning the account by the author. Additionally, given your decision to post anonymously, one might question the motivation behind your apparent concern.

Your post is misleading. Without a pic of YOUR contract and the monthly charge for each month during that contract and your on-time payment history (or not and any late fees) an allegation of a 74+% increase doesn’t hold water.

Original review Aug 01, 2025
I have been totally taken advantage of, discriminated against, and classified in the situation. They have price gouged over inflation on their storage unit prices.

They changed my unit price without my permission and tried to run my debit card for four days until they closed my bank account for fraudulent activity without my permission. Again, they charged me $2,000 a month for a unit that the previous owner was paying $654. Now they have contacted Storage Treasures and had my account suspended, giving them inaccurate information on the facts of this case. As far as customer service or corporate for CubeSmart, I have had zero luck in contacting anyone that could assist me in any way whatsoever at all to resolve this matter.

As of right now, they claim I owe them right at $4,000, along with numerous other issues that CubeSmart has not been honest about, and then return, destroying my relationship with Storage Treasures. I highly recommend that no one ever deal with them. They do not go by the books; they do not do what they say; they do not offer you what they advertise, and it is the worst unit I have ever dealt with in my entire dealings with storage units.

I encourage anyone and everyone to please go elsewhere. Please do not, I repeat, do not let them manipulate you into giving them your money so they can turn around and do what they do, which is rob people.

Several years ago, I needed a storage locker for some household goods. I went to the local CubeSmart and met a very disagreeable manager, checked the property and found it dirty, dark, and unsafe.

A new facility - called A Storage Depot -- was being built nearby. I was one of the first customers: excellent service, good manager, reasonable prices.

On November 18th, I received an email invoice of a payment demand from CubeSmart which I disregarded as a scam. The following day, I went to the Depot in the evening to retrieve some items from my locker and noticed the gates were open. I went in, got what I wanted and left.

The next evening, I was locked out: my gate code did not work. When I called the following day, the phone number for Depot did not work. My call was diverted to CubeSmart. It became apparent that the facility had changed hands on the 20th without notice to any customer.

"We changed your gate code; here's the new one," they said. I went to the facility that evening: the gate code did not work and I was put on "phone hold" to get assistance.

The gate was opened by another customer. I was on hold for half an hour waiting for instructions. In the meantime, I went to my locker and found my lock covered with 'CubeSmart' tape.

The call was finally disconnected on the other end. I drove to the exit gate: my code did not work. I called again: no help was provided. I called repeatedly: still no help.

I was offered some appalling solutions, such as: "You can stay there overnight; the office opens at 0930 tomorrow," and "Call an Uber; you can go out the people gate, go home and come back when the office opens in the morning," and "The office is closed," and "The district manager isn't answering her phone now -- I left a message but I doubt she will call me back," and "Call the police; they have a code," and "Stop calling us!

No one here can help you! This is just a call center no where near your location!"

Two and a half hours later, at about 11:30 PM, a corporate VP finally called. He said the code I was given was wrong: half of it was missing. He gave me four different codes to try: none worked.

I eventually called the police in order to file a complaint that the property owner had falsely imprisoned me, which is a criminal offense. By mere luck -- the earlier claim that the cops had a code was another lie -- one officer managed to locate the mechanical panel and used a manual method to open the gate and let me out.

I had spent more than 2.5 hours locked in during a cold, rainy night with an elderly dog, running out of fuel in my car which was my only source of warmth, and without medication I desperately needed. The next day, the district manager called me and tried to placate me with a month's free rent for one of my lockers. I told her I felt like I was not only imprisoned by Cube Dumb -- that's what I call this operation of people who cannot and refuse to solve problems.

She was offended by that, and I told her that I was offended by receiving a payment demand because I was now an involuntary renter from her company before getting a notice of the sale from Depot to CS, having my old gate code changed, the new gate code being fraudulent, and receiving no help from the five or six individuals at a phone center. I have not heard from her since then. Furthermore, the offer of a month's rent for my larger unit? Never materialized.

On December 13th -- I had already received another bill for January and no other information -- I was locked in again: I input my gate code and the exit gate wouldn't open.

I called the 'emergency number' and finally got a rather nasty 'Cory' on the line. He wanted the last four digits of the credit card I used to verify my identity: an absurd request. Instead, as verification, he should've asked for my name, locker number, gate code, and billing address to assure security. He accused me of trespassing on the property after hours.

I informed him that a property owner claiming that another is trespassing cannot imprison a trespasser to make a trespassing accusation stick.

In the next day's meeting with the facility manager, I was informed that the new owners lock the gates at 10:00 PM sharp, the first notice I was given of this new policy.

Currently, I find myself an unwilling party to a contract with a vendor I would not patronize. Upon investigation, I discovered that the modus operandi of this company involves buying up existing properties and raising the rent for all customers within a month or two of taking possession.

This is done knowing that many will tolerate the rent increase because moving one's property to another facility brings both expense and inconvenience.

In conclusion, I caution everyone not to engage in business with Cube Dumb. It is a nightmare of disorganization, poor customer service, and blame shifting, with little to no effort dedicated to solving problems.
