Verified Reviewer |Foul play suspected from a supposed site manager
I have been a customer/client with Cubesmart for at least 2 years and have had my account set up with direct debit payments drawn from my bank account so I wouldn't have to worry about the payments each month. This past month of February, my direct deposit was mysteriously stopped without my knowledge (after 2 years of no issues at all) and the payment was never taken out automatically for the month for some reason.
I didn't alter anything or know anything about it and assumed my account was fine like it had been in the past. Around the 6th of February, I came in to remove some things from my storage and my access code didn't work. After talking with the manager of the property, he told me that the automatic payment didn't come out and also stated that I would need to pay an additional late fee just to get into my things! I want to know why and how my account was changed without my knowledge or explicit authority.
I feel like the manager on site purposely altered my account information to cause my account to default. I am formally asking for an internal investigation to be initiated. This manager was extremely unpleasant to talk to and insisted that I vacate the property when all I was trying to do was pay my (suddenly inflated monthly rent amount) to remove the rest of my things and close my storage unit. There shouldn't have been an interruption in my billing because I didn't change anything.
My name is Lavell Mccoy and my location was the Cubesmart in Austin, TX at the Owen Tech location. The phone number associated with my account at the time was 737-615-****.
Preferred solution: partial refund
User's recommendation: This Cubesmart is Not Secure. They leave their gate open for anybody to come drive in. The management is never there anymore, and my unit was tampered with on several occasions while their property manager was nowhere to be located

Verified Reviewer |False Imprisonment: Twice!
Several years ago, I needed a storage locker for some household goods. I went to the local CubeSmart and met a very disagreeable manager, checked the property and found it dirty, dark, and unsafe.
A new facility - called A Storage Depot -- was being built nearby. I was one of the first customers: excellent service, good manager, reasonable prices.
On November 18th, I received an email invoice of a payment demand from CubeSmart which I disregarded as a scam. The following day, I went to the Depot in the evening to retrieve some items from my locker and noticed the gates were open. I went in, got what I wanted and left.
The next evening, I was locked out: my gate code did not work. When I called the following day, the phone number for Depot did not work. My call was diverted to CubeSmart. It became apparent that the facility had changed hands on the 20th without notice to any customer.
"We changed your gate code; here's the new one," they said. I went to the facility that evening: the gate code did not work and I was put on "phone hold" to get assistance.
The gate was opened by another customer. I was on hold for half an hour waiting for instructions. In the meantime, I went to my locker and found my lock covered with 'CubeSmart' tape.
The call was finally disconnected on the other end. I drove to the exit gate: my code did not work. I called again: no help was provided. I called repeatedly: still no help.
I was offered some appalling solutions, such as: "You can stay there overnight; the office opens at 0930 tomorrow," and "Call an Uber; you can go out the people gate, go home and come back when the office opens in the morning," and "The office is closed," and "The district manager isn't answering her phone now -- I left a message but I doubt she will call me back," and "Call the police; they have a code," and "Stop calling us!
No one here can help you! This is just a call center no where near your location!"
Two and a half hours later, at about 11:30 PM, a corporate VP finally called. He said the code I was given was wrong: half of it was missing. He gave me four different codes to try: none worked.
I eventually called the police in order to file a complaint that the property owner had falsely imprisoned me, which is a criminal offense. By mere luck -- the earlier claim that the cops had a code was another lie -- one officer managed to locate the mechanical panel and used a manual method to open the gate and let me out.
I had spent more than 2.5 hours locked in during a cold, rainy night with an elderly dog, running out of fuel in my car which was my only source of warmth, and without medication I desperately needed. The next day, the district manager called me and tried to placate me with a month's free rent for one of my lockers. I told her I felt like I was not only imprisoned by Cube Dumb -- that's what I call this operation of people who cannot and refuse to solve problems.
She was offended by that, and I told her that I was offended by receiving a payment demand because I was now an involuntary renter from her company before getting a notice of the sale from Depot to CS, having my old gate code changed, the new gate code being fraudulent, and receiving no help from the five or six individuals at a phone center. I have not heard from her since then. Furthermore, the offer of a month's rent for my larger unit? Never materialized.
On December 13th -- I had already received another bill for January and no other information -- I was locked in again: I input my gate code and the exit gate wouldn't open.
I called the 'emergency number' and finally got a rather nasty 'Cory' on the line. He wanted the last four digits of the credit card I used to verify my identity: an absurd request. Instead, as verification, he should've asked for my name, locker number, gate code, and billing address to assure security. He accused me of trespassing on the property after hours.
I informed him that a property owner claiming that another is trespassing cannot imprison a trespasser to make a trespassing accusation stick.
In the next day's meeting with the facility manager, I was informed that the new owners lock the gates at 10:00 PM sharp, the first notice I was given of this new policy.
Currently, I find myself an unwilling party to a contract with a vendor I would not patronize. Upon investigation, I discovered that the modus operandi of this company involves buying up existing properties and raising the rent for all customers within a month or two of taking possession.
This is done knowing that many will tolerate the rent increase because moving one's property to another facility brings both expense and inconvenience.
In conclusion, I caution everyone not to engage in business with Cube Dumb. It is a nightmare of disorganization, poor customer service, and blame shifting, with little to no effort dedicated to solving problems.

Verified ReviewerStorage is always closed Noone is in the office. Supposed to be open gate is always broke down
The restroom is still nasty; there are no paper towels or toilet paper. Trash is everywhere.
For the end of October, due to the gate being out of service, time has been cut short as well. Please consider a reduced price for the time being, until the gate is working and time is back to regular hours.

My storage unit, along with others in my section, was broken into and vandalized back in September 2024. They changed the locks and claimed they had video surveillance and yet they have broken in again, taken the rest of my things.

Extremely urgent matter with access to my storage location at the Homestead Florida facility. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE OPTION TO DIRECTLY CONTACT LOCATION MANAGER
Would like to speak in person to on site manager at Homestead Florida location. Unable to speak to them by phone after 4 attempts today after 9 am.
No option to leave a voice message.
I have added phone log indicating multiple attempts to speak to ANYONE at the location or corporate customer service. Very disappointed with a prompt customer service request not answer to corp offices.
User's recommendation: Don’t choose the Homestead Florida location due to very poor customer service!

Verified Reviewer |UNIT INFESTED WITH SPIDERS
I've been using CubeSmart in Old Saybrook, CT to store my things after I moved from NYC. Yesterday, I went to my storage unit and disgust doesn't even begin to describe the condition of it.
There were huge spiders everywhere! My unit was infested!! It was also covered in webs, there were cockroaches, I saw a packet of what looked like rat poisoning (in my unit), and I kept hearing something that sounded like a snake or rat running around (luckily I didn't see one). When I called, the woman I spoke with told me to file a claim with my homeowner's insurance.
Today, this dump called and refused to have pest control come and they also refused to reimburse me for the months I trusted these slumlords with my possessions.
Lol no sweetie, CubeSmart will pay for any damages and reimburse any fees or they will see me in court. I'm about to report this joke of a business to the city and state so no one else has to endure the *** I'm going through.

Verified Reviewer |SOLD my unit without my knowledge :(
CubeSmart Hemet, California location. I am so sickened by the deceitful actions of this mother, daughter duo.
Be forewarned, if they see something they want, they will go to unthinkable lengths to steal your items under the disguise of an administrative lien. They even require a cash payment in person that will never show as paid, overcharging $241 for insurance. An itemized billing receipt is only received if payment is made online by card. How conveniently they make you pay in cash.
In August, I told them in person that I would be back in September to move out. When I contacted them to let them know I was coming, they replied 'the cube was sold on 9/17' they accepted a deposit from a bidder on 9/19 and will not respond to my emails. I was not notified of the auction date or the sale and I was up to date with payments on the date of sale. From the very first month I rented, they put a lien on me every month to gain $110 that could only be paid in cash.
I have a greenhouse business and all of my equipment, including lights, plus my family heirlooms and 3 years of legal research that cannot be replaced, were stored there. Items from all around the world, many tools, and so much personal belongings, my lifelong items. I manage ranches and I was waiting for my accommodations for my next ranch to get ready for move in. I started moving out 5 months later and they knew I would be coming back in September to get my stuff.
They act cruelly and have no moral fiber. They prey on innocent customers with confusing emails from multiple addresses, giving amounts due that do not reflect the total outcome. The level of harassment from them while I was moving was unthinkable to display to another human being. I had to load my truck and drive 3 hours and come back for another load.
They said I was loitering and could not spend more than 45 min, even though I am a 60-year-old woman doing all the loading. Then in August, I had 5 days left on my grace period to finish moving as much as I could. I went in and they said the corporate office had reduced the grace period to only 5 days and I no longer had access. From one day to the next, I told them I get paid on the 26th to run my card and I would be out of service until I return.
Only to find out they sold my life on 9/17 and it's not worth returning. I am disheartened by the lack of care and the abuse they put me through. I can only imagine all the misery those 2 have generated; it's rather disgusting to watch in real-time. Jesus Christ is my witness, who is their witness to their actions?
Sorry to vent, but I have to get this off my chest and let go. I hope this will help another. I would not rent from them and if you do, I would prepay for a determined number of months and then move on. I wish I had not been so trusting.
I wish they had done the right thing.
It is kind of like the 2020 election when we watched our fellow Americans deliver loads of ballots and assist in fraudulent activities for money. To all you thieves and cheaters, your time is short and your future in *** is forever.
- I thought first month free and 40percent off was good deal but i never got it
- I wish we had a way to know when someone is lying before damage occurs
Preferred solution: All my belongings back it's not right. Otherwise I will get an attorney.
User's recommendation: Prepay your rental or don't do it because these people who live an work there spend all their time stealing items and call it " mysteriously disappeared" and figuring out how to take your cash and charge your card. Be aware. It's not the good old days anymore very little people of virtue

This place is a disaster, garbage is all over and no one cleans. People are sleeping in storage at night, God knows if they're breaking into storages.
It's a total disaster. I see workers sitting, doing nothing, while this place is a mess. Something needs to be done.
This is unacceptable. I'm one who doesn't usually complain, but come on, really...

Verified ReviewerPast due bill/autopay
I received a bill today for $502 for my storage unit. I was told my unit hasn't been paid since July. I enrolled in autopay a while ago for this very reason, to make sure my bill was paid every month on time. I was receiving a regular statement like I have every month. Since I had autopay, I was under the impression my account was current. I never received a phone call or a specific email informing me there was an issue with my account. I never would have let my account lapse, which again is why I enrolled in autopay.
Now, my bill is over $500 which is a lot to pay at once. I spoke with the manager at the facility and she was extremely rude. She said I stopped a payment before going through and took my credit card off my account, and did this through the app. Which is not true. 1. I've never used the CubeSmart app before, and 2. that defeats the whole purpose of autopay and to let it go unpaid means I'm willingly letting it go to auction. I DO NOT want that to happen. When I set up autopay, I did it over the phone. I don't know what happened or where the discrepancy is. I'm hoping someone from the corporate office can help me with this matter so I can bring my account current and not run into this issue in the future.
Thank you for your help,
Kimberly Hunt
